Interview with Antoine Verglas

Q:You’ve photographed some of the world’s most famous models: Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford. Tell the people a little about yourself. Where are you from, your background?

I’m from Paris originally. I studied in business school (Sup de Co), but was always interested in marketing and advertising. I worked on TV commercials as a teenager and ended up hosting a TV show about music and movies on Channel 5 in France. I started to take pictures of my model girlfriend in mid ’80s and ….

Q:How would you define fashion?

Besides the literal manufacturing of clothing, I would say 3 words: a trend, an attitude, a look.

A trend, an attitude, a look.

Q:When did you realize you wanted to become a photographer?

Since I was 16 I’ve loved aesthetic beauty, fashion images and magazines.

Q:What was the first book of published photos you’ve had?

A book on Lindsay Ellingson called SHOWGIRL. It took just 2 days in my former studio in Tribeca.

Q:Who are you looking forward to seeing this fashion week?

Everybody, as you never know who will surprise you … or not.

Q:Who is one of your favorite models to work with?

I love them all, with a preference for a few over the years ….

Q:What matters to you most as a photographer?

Kindness, humility, good manners and sense of style.

Kindness, humility, good manners and sense of style.

Q:What’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a shoot for a subject?

The shooting itself. I like the prep and final result, but shooting is always the most gratifying moment for me. It’s when you try to give the extra to the concept and when you try to take advantage of the unexpected.

Take advantage of the unexpected.

Q:How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

Usually meeting with a stylist, magazine editor or creative director, advertising clients, business owners, designers etc. Discussions on concepts, casting models, hair, makeup, looks, etc.

Q:What advice do you have for aspiring photographers?

Always shoot. Never stop, even if not working. Look at blogs, magazines, movies, looks in the street. Keep your eyes open and shoot.

Keep your eyes open and shoot.

Q:How would you define your personal style?

Sexy and sensual.

Q:Where can people find out more about you and your work?

Clic Gallery. You can also find a copy of my book, Antoine Verglas | Untitled.
